What Is Global Entry?
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program that provides expedited clearance for pre-approved travelers entering the United States. Membership requires an application, background check, and an in-person interview—with interview wait times that vary by enrollment center.
Global Entry Benefits
Use automated kiosks at major airports to skip long customs lines when returning to the United States.
Enjoy expedited security screening at 200+ U.S. airports—keep your shoes on, laptop in bag.
One application covers you for five years. Many credit cards reimburse the $120 application fee.
Who Should Apply for Global Entry
- International travelers entering the U.S. regularly
- Frequent flyers who want TSA PreCheck included
- Travelers able to attend an in-person interview at an enrollment center
Not recommended if you are unable or unwilling to attend an in-person interview.
Global Entry Application Process
Apply online
Create an account on the official CBP Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website and submit your application with the $120 fee.
Wait for conditional approval
CBP reviews your application and conducts a background check. This typically takes 2–4 weeks but can vary.
Schedule an interview
Once conditionally approved, schedule an in-person interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center. Interview availability varies significantly by location—major airports often have longer waits, while smaller centers may have earlier openings.
Attend your interview
Complete a brief 10–15 minute interview at an enrollment center. Bring required documents for identity verification.
Receive final approval
If approved, your Global Entry membership is activated for 5 years. Your Known Traveler Number (KTN) provides TSA PreCheck access.
Global Entry Interview Requirements
- Valid passport (and any additional passports used for travel)
- Lawful permanent resident card (green card), if applicable
- One document proving residency (driver's license, utility bill, etc.)
- Conditional approval letter or confirmation number
- • Global Entry membership does not include priority interview scheduling—availability depends on enrollment centers
- • All interviews are scheduled through the official CBP Trusted Traveler Programs website
- • Approval is not guaranteed and depends on CBP's background check
Is Global Entry worth it?
For frequent international travelers, yes. Global Entry saves significant time at customs and includes TSA PreCheck. If you travel internationally 2+ times per year, the time savings typically justify the $120 fee.
How long does Global Entry approval take?
The full process—from application to final approval—typically takes 2–6 months. Conditional approval usually arrives in 2–4 weeks, but scheduling an interview can take longer depending on enrollment center availability.
Does Global Entry include TSA PreCheck?
Yes. Global Entry membership automatically includes TSA PreCheck benefits. Your Known Traveler Number (KTN) works for both programs.
How long does the Global Entry interview take?
The interview itself typically takes 10–15 minutes. An officer will verify your documents, take your fingerprints, and ask a few questions about your travel history.
Can families attend Global Entry interviews together?
Yes. Family members can schedule interviews at the same time and location. Each applicant must have their own conditional approval and complete their own interview.
What if I can't find an interview appointment?
Interview availability varies by location. Consider checking smaller or less popular enrollment centers, or use an appointment alert service to get notified when cancellations open up.
Does existing Global Entry status guarantee faster interviews?
No. Interview availability depends on enrollment center capacity and cancellations. Existing Global Entry membership does not provide priority access to interview appointments.
